Lion Doug Stram awarded the distinguished Knight of the Blind
On September 27th, the New Fairfield
Lions Club recognized one of its own – Lion Doug Stram was awarded the
distinguished Knight of the Blind award for his outstanding service to Lions and
the New Fairfield community. In the presence of his wife Kathy Stram, Doug
received his honor from Ray Shea, Past President of the Connecticut Lions Eye
Research Foundation.
Humanitarian service is the goal of all Lions. The
association was founded for the purpose of serving others, and in doing so, make
the world a better place. In 1925 Helen Keller challenged the Lions of the world
to dedicate themselves to helping the blind and sight impaired. Lions everywhere
have responded through thousands of projects to benefit those in need.
The Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation (CLERF)
was founded in 1956 to support basic research into the causes of eye disease and
blindness. CLERF plays an important role in the establishment and support of eye
research at both Yale and UConn, awarding more than $5 million dollars to date
in the State of Connecticut.
The Knight of the Blind is designated CLERF’s
highest honor, symbolizing the attributes of generosity, compassion and concern
for others, and the high esteem in which the recipient is held by other Lions.
Congratulations Lion Doug!
