Don Cleary has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow Don Cleary has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community. Named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones, the fellowship is the foundation’s highest honor. It is a recognition of commitment to humanitarian service. Don is a member of the New Fairfield Lions Club, who bestowed this honor upon him at a ceremony on December 13th at Steakhouse 22 in Pawling, New York. Don’s wife Carol attended the event, which coincided with the Club’s Holiday Party. Don received a finely crafted plaque and lapel pin acknowledging his dedication to the foundation’s humanitarian goals. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, Don becomes a part of the growing network of individuals who are committed to improving the quality of life for people locally and in communities around the world. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with nearly 1.4 million members. As the charitable arm of the association, LCIF makes grants for vital community and global projects that meet a wide range of humanitarian needs. The LCIF SightFirst program unites approximately 46,000 Lions clubs in 193 countries and geographical areas in a worldwide endeavor to significantly reduce preventable blindness. Locally, the New Fairfield Lions Club conducts numerous community service projects and fundraisers that allow it to fund programs both within New Fairfield and beyond it’s borders. This year alone, the Club, with the support of generous donations from the community, provided in excess of $4,000 for Tsunami relief and another $10,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief. This money goes directly to Lions Clubs in the affected areas for direct distribution to their communities. The New Fairfield Lions Club meets on the second and forth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at Biscotti’s Restaurant. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.
